Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
