The star has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to save the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted funding support in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The concept that money from shows in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

The musician is not the first artist to give his Mercury Prize prize money to good deeds.

Back when they earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their release the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her award across multiple organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," the artist told the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the local youth club that supported their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally winners that year M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning touched another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

The first in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
